Inhale/Exhale

by Caitlin Kalafus

Using a scanner to link the unexpected “glitches” ones mind can have during an anxiety attack.

The process in which the images were morphed were made to reflect the state of mind through which a panic attack may unexpectedly arrive out of nowhere. As humans, stress interacts with us in different ways. Each image was placed in a grid to represent the level of calmness and control. The images increase in number while retaining their position in the grid to express stress as it builds. By playing with the effects and physically moving each spread in a sometimes aggressive, unplanned manner, I was able to attain the levels of anxiety from beginning to end.

The choice of cover is intended to introduce a calm emotion, before the throwing the viewer off course with the glitched and morphed images. I’ve chosen to place my piece in a brown paper bag to help the viewer “inhale and exhale” using it as an aid like somebody breathing in and out of it to help bring them back to a controlled level of calmness.
