Thinking in Shapes

by Jane Gardner

As humans, we often have a subconscious tendency to identify certain shapes as something that is familiar to us, similar to how people identify forms in clouds. The concept of my project was to create two posters that the viewer can easily interact with, one poster that shows images from our class outlined in very minimal shapes, as the second poster shows these shapes without images. All of the shapes and images have corresponding numbers so the viewer can correctly identify what each shape is, creating more of a fun, interactive guessing game. I also found inspiration from a quote by the philosopher David Hume:

“There is an universal tendency among mankind to conceive all beings like themselves, and to transfer to every object, those qualities, with which they are familiarly acquainted, and of which they are intimately conscious. We find human faces in the moon, armies in the clouds; and by a natural propensity, if not corrected by experience and reflection, ascribe malice or good-will to every thing, that hurts or pleases us.”
